Assuming you aren't making a joke, the first definition you get "According to a popular custom, this bone from a cooked bird is broken by two people and the holder of the longer portion is then entitled to make a wish."

In America, on Thanksgiving, it’s a tradition that two people make a wish and break the wishbone. Whoever gets the bigger piece supposedly has their wish come true. It’s a grotesque joke about just pulling them apart like they were a wish bone. But I laughed very hard when I first read it.

I'm sure it's wonderful for the patients, but this is just a long-running PR stunt for a country with insane human rights violations
•
u/CVGPi 3h ago
The PR stunt is a bonus. More like "We pay the patients so our doctors can be experienced and produce more value for the society later for more than we pay".
Unfortunately most governments fail to see the benefits after the next election and does stuff based on "what today?"

u/Practical-Sleep4259 3h ago
They are developing a skillset that is probably unique only to them.
In america that is poverty for life no matter how much money you got, 20+ hours and 40+ doctors.
I'm pretty sure that's if money is no object.
Now the real fucked up part is the surgery probably only cost 10 - 20 thousand in real resources, it's the labor and hospital fees that = 10 million.
•
→ More replies (10)•
u/Ok-Disk-2191 2h ago
it's the labor and hospital fees that = 10 million.
you also might want to add that the healthcare price is also artificially increased because of insurance, adding on administration fees, doing deals to make the numbers look big on paper to push premiums up, If you do a bit of research, you'll also find a lot of the big private healthcare insurance companies hold major shares of pharmaceutical companies. The push for profit is insane.
•
u/Thanosmiss234 2h ago
PR stunt or not. I would definitely use the program if needed. The high morale people aren’t separating my kids! They talk the talk but don’t walk the walk.
You want people to stop going them….. offer the same service for free!

Those surgeons are doing what almost no surgeon can do. So if they get PR out of it then good for them. Two of the doctors on the team are women. So let’s not make blanket statements.
•
u/godly_stand_2643 2h ago
This may be the most interesting thing I've ever seen. They have photos of the twins before and after, along with notes on what organs they shared, how long they spent in surgery, how old they were in surgery.
Imagine being attached to another human being for 2 years and then waking up one day and you're your own person.
I couldn't believe the photo of the two twins that shared a skull and a brain before they were separated
•
u/BrightNooblar 2h ago

That's so random but its cool
EDIT: after reading the wars in the comments, obviously your opinion on an evil country shouldn't change just because of this sort of thing which is clearly a marketing campaign but im sure glad they didn't spend it to do something worse so can we just appreciate that kids are being helped?
•
u/DharmaCub 3h ago
It's not random, it's reputation-washing. They've been doing this for decades now on different fronts, including sports and comedy.
Without meaningful political change, Saudi Arabia is still just as totalitarian and horrifying as it ever was.
•
u/BoatMajestic 3h ago
Honestly, there are far better ways to wash a reputation than just making a program for a super rare disease and never talking about it. My guess would be that in the 90’s, some twins in the royale family were conjoined and since then the family take it personally, because it’s a very rare condition and they struggled to find help.
•
u/idkkkkkkk 3h ago
It's because there's a world-renowned Saudi pediatrics surgeon who specializes in complex conjoined twin separation surgeries.
•
•
u/jittery_raccoon 2h ago
Or someone lobbied for the cause and they were like sure. Someone's research area. Then once it becomes a thing, it grows into a whole program. Even countries with evil heads of state have universities, research, and humanitarian programs

u/Uvoheart 3h ago
I think that’s the point. conjoined twins are extremely rare. In this case, you get a fuckton of positive karma for about 67 surgeries over 30+ years
→ More replies (4)•
u/TAssociate77 3h ago
No no, you don't understand, everything we do with our lives as Saudis is to appease and whitewash our reputation with our Western overlords.
•
u/billy_teats 3h ago
Is it washing or can an entire nation do good things at the same time it does bad things? Is th US reputation washing by providing aid and military defense to dozens of countries? I know the saudis are throwing money at sports to increase their reputation but this is advancing medicine which has a noticeable benefit to society. An entire nation can do good and bad at the same time, like killing folks while attempting to enforce laws.
•
u/segflt 3h ago
It sucks yes but also enables fast and huge change, for better or worse, like adding this program. Decision by committee takes ages for better or worse.
•
u/No_Fairweathers 3h ago
Yeah it can be bad that they are just trying to cover up their atrocities, but it doesn't undo the actual positive acts being done, either.
It's better for good things to be done for the wrong reasons than to not be done at all.

Also surgeons need to keep up their skills with enough cases and given that conjoined twins is so rare, it’s helping the specialist surgeons maintain their skills - needed in a country which has the highest rate of congenital defects due to cousin marriage.

I can't help but feel that there's a hint of racism in believing that everything positive the brown people do is to appease us white people, but any USAID grant ever was because the USA was a beacon of democracy, not to whitewash its decades long support of genocides and war, for example.
For some reason i never see, when a white country does something humanitarian, a "yeah but remember that they do that bad thing".

I think it is more nuanced than that. Like, yeah, the funding is coming from a place of cynicism, an attempt to improve their reputation. But the doctors likely are very committed and passionate about helping people.

I mean, the swords are different, but you don't see every single post about the U.S. remind everyone that they have the death penalty, their intelligence agencies are known to experiment on their own population and have a kill list, and their federal officers are happily shooting people on the streets for protesting illegal kidnappings. Why are countries only a monolith of evil-evil-evil if they're eastern?
