People have very skewed ideas about what "average looking" is because of mass media. The guy in the middle is 100% above-average. He could be one of Elaine's boyfriends in Seinfeld or something.
Yeah also because unattractive people post way less pictures of themselves online - so the training data of AI is always biased towards attractiveness.
Even average people don't post that much. I'm kinda chronically online and despite barely using image heavy social media such as Instagram, taking the bus always reminds me I'm actually average looking and not particularly ugly. Hollywood and social media really fucked with our minds
I think it’s more accurate to say that people don’t post unattractive pictures of themselves online. Most people look way better in their photos online than they do irl.
Generate an attractive, average, and unattractive man. All 3 should be smiling, standing, wearing the same outfit with the same grooming style

Still trying to see how the middle guy is average?? They've chosen a guy in the top 1% of people with genetically symmetrical features, a slightly less symmetrical guy who is considerable more attractive than the average person, and a depressed man with hygiene issues.
My guess - results definitely skewed by the abundance of celebrity and model photos and the fact that 'average' people usually only post their best angles or edited/filtered pics to look more attractive vs. unattractive photos posted by people to be funny/mean/etc.
Edit: also, if you compare the faces, the third guy is practically the same as the second, except older, fatter, tired eyes, balding, shirt stains, and a miserable expression.
I like how the background itself goes from attractive to unattractive across the picture. Hot dude's walking down a Paris street, ugly dude's walking down a pre-1989 East Berlin street.
Please take down this picture of me. I'd had a bad couple of days and, really, I didn't care about my appearance. I do know that navy blue doesn't suit me and I won't do it again.
These 2 are probably the most important things you can work on to improve your appearance. I always thought I was ugly as fuck and would die alone, turns out if you take care of yourself you will reach at the very least an average point where you actually have a chance to get a partner. Rest is just the personality.
Well I mean, your inner world is reflected in your outer world. Poor hygiene and weight are generally viewed as unattractive. Even people who are like... "structurally ugly" are seen more as "unique" if they take care of themselves. Look at all the well-known actors who aren't the best looking but have tons of character in their face. I really think most of what we call "ugly" is inner projection. I personally dont even find the typical hot girl or chiseled guy archetype to be that attractive, cause I dont love the personality that often comes with people who do themselves up like that. I'm much more into a down to earth hippie vibe. Its all about who we are on the inside.

I’m so turned off by men who look like they spend $100 on haircuts, get their eyebrows waxed, spend 4 hours in the gym a day, and are active participants in looks maxing forums. 8-10 looks like someone trying to be an influencer or someone who writes long AI sounding posts on linked in about how self made they are. Agree 6 is the hottest one, and 4 and 5 are still cute and look like we'd get along. 8 and up look like they would be really into themselves and it would be hard to relate to them about anything. 1-3 are not accurate 1-3s, those are more actual 4s. ChatGPT doesn't actually know how to make ugly people.
I think the middle one is the best looking although I'm not sure if that's because subconsciously I see her as "attainable" and not the supposed most attractive one.
0 is crazy work, she's at least a 2.5. Sub1 is severe deformity or something. And no chance thr middle one is a 8, she's squarely in thr average range, one meets plenty of similarly attractive women every day. 6 at best.
You must live in a big city full of attractive people. I live in Kentucky which is the fattest state out of all 50, so here in Kentucky, that middle woman is definitely at least a 7. Maybe it depends a bit on region.
Interesting that it's idea of removing bias is to paint black as attractive, brown as average, and white as ugly. You would think it would just choose a different race but make all three the same race.
This is an interesting experiment. I asked the same about black women. It seems that texturism, ageism, and colourism play a part in ChatGPT’s evaluations of women.

Generate an image of an attractive, average, and unattractive man standing alongside each other. They should all be smiling, wearing the same outfit, be of the same age, do not have partial baldness, and should have the same weight/height.
Attractive one is still taller... but all 3 are... OK somehow.
