They had to show off Wailord to make sure we understood scale. The underwater portion looks beautiful.

I can’t believe it, honestly. A genuinely nice on the eyes Pokemon game- I think the last one of those was New Snap (not developed by Gamefreak)

I really really hope that implies we’ll be able to dive again. That would be amazing, since the last games where we’ve had that mechanic were ORAS, atleast if I remember correctly.

u/Capretbaggingcarpets 11h ago
I would be shocked if you couldn’t. The shot in the ocean looks like it has a pathing at the bottom almost like a road. Maybe I’m just huffing copium though.

u/AcanthaceaeAway9377 11h ago edited 10h ago
Nah, thats a valid take from what we've seen from the trailer. Im willing to place a wager that we will be able to traverse underwater.
37
u/Acedons 11h ago
That's just the waves part. Wind most likely means flying like ORAS too
→ More replies (3)→ More replies (4)19
u/RogueCross 10h ago
Nah, it's not just copium. They wouldn't show such a beautiful underwater if it wasn't explorable. It wouldn't make sense otherwise.

I am willing to bet that it releases Friday, February 26th, 2027.
The final day of the full 30th Anniversary year and the literal DAY before Pokemon Day 2027 starting the 31st year.

35
u/berejser 11h ago edited 9h ago
Every mainline game since Black and White has been released in October or November. With the exception of Legends Arceus, which was pushed to January because BDSP was released that November.
It will almost certainly be an October or November release.

I'm not surprised.
They've been treating ZA as a proper "mid-gen" with the usual hoopla they give to a new generation with the tieins with all the various properties, and it's working wonderfully.
I think they really got the memo, and they're in no rush. They've rebuilt the Pokémon machine to be less reliant on a constant stream of new generations in the last few years, and Nintendo itself doesn't need Pokémon as much now that they only have 1 console to sell instead of 2.
They've even uncoupled the competitive from the mainline games, which was another thing pushing for constant release cycles.
I think overall the environment of this tenth gen looks healthy as fuck, probably the healthiest it has looked in a solid decade or more. I'm more than happy to wait until the fall of 2027 and even beyond. The first look at the games looked incredible.
Upgrading my status from cautiously optimistic to flat-out optimistic. SV had a great gameplay loop, and it was the most fun I had with a Pokémon game in years. It's clear to me the only thing they lacked was time and scale.
Now they have time; let's see if they also added scale.

I've not been up to date for the past few years. What did they do with competitive to detach it from the mainline series?
173
u/GalavantGalvantula where my bug at 12h ago
Pretty sure they're referring to Pokemon Champions, as the whole game is revolving around the battle aspect of the games.
90
u/Dhiox 12h ago
Don't mind dexit as much with champions in play, now I can finally battle with my nearly two decade old collection in its entirety.
→ More replies (9)65
u/RishStars 12h ago
Pokemon Champions, I believe.
That’s taking over as the competitive machine since you can literally do things like set IVs in there, pick movesets out of a list, etc.
If you’ve seen the leaks regarding it, it’s meant to slot in now as the de facto competitive game.
Should give Winds/Waves more time to cook on its own instead of holding back a new competitive season.
Can now just patch Gen 10 Pokemon/Gimmicks into Champions and call it a day.
→ More replies (4)128
u/theRotengen 12h ago
Pokemon Champions ensures
- all "gimmicks" (megas, tera, dmax) can be replayable
- combat can be preserved, allowing them to revamp mainline into legends-arceus like
- national dex exists

I was expecting 2026, so seeing 2027 was a surprise. I'm happy however, because that means they're giving these games more development time. More time in the oven to cook and hopefully become great games!
Also, this means gen 9 will be one of if not the longest lasting generation.
1.2k
u/King-Cruz 12h ago
Hopefully gen 9s atrocious bug filled launch was a learning experience and that’s why they are giving 10 the extra time

edit: for those wondering, here's the BDSP only Pokemon (assuming you only have the Switch, no 3DS) Hoenn Corsola, Tailow, Skitty, Zigzagoon, Spinada, Clamperl, Castform. theyre currently only in BDSP on the Switch games.
edit: added Gen 2 Pokemon.
edit 3: apparently Natu, Wobbuffet, G-Corsola exists in SWSH. Miltank exists in a DLC area of SWSH.

I'm honestly happy that it's not going to be released this year. When it releases, it will be 5 years after Scarlet and Violet, and only for Switch 2. A 2027 release means Gen 10 will have the longest wait time between any generation. Gens 3 & 4 each took four years to develop and most/all of the rest only took 3.
This is a good thing. Given how Scarlet and Violet came out, I'd be fine if these games ended up being delayed further to 2028 as long as they come out as great as SV deserved to be.

Since they were taking longer with this one, i expected it to look better than the last few gens. What I was not expecting was it looking so much better that it managed to win over the terminally online and jaded Pokémon community (at least in chat.) Looks cool. They seem to be doubling down on the nature overhaul with the names to evoke that BotW imagery.

Is this the longest break between gens? 5 whole years damn. But it's absolutely worth it if they can perfect it and not put out a half baked unpolished game like SV. This is already looking so so so much better.
Gecqua is absolutely my starter I'm in love <3
