Discussion First Look at the live action god of war series
2.1k
u/Formal_Profession_26 12h ago
Its so weird how something can look so accurate yet so goofy.
1.2k
u/att0mic 11h ago
That's the exact reason why not everything needs a live action adaptation.
Don't get me wrong, the casting so far seems great, and I'm sure it's gonna be alright for what it is, but I have serious doubts about GoW translating well into live action.
323
u/Formal_Profession_26 11h ago
I agree. Especially because the game has such huge action set pieces i cant imagine that being translated well through live action.

u/Helm_LeftHammerHand 11h ago
I think maybe they should have thought about a animated spin off or something instead but maybe i'm wrong and they'll somehow pull it off

u/IvanMcbomb 11h ago
I mean the biggest problem with a live action adaptation is that the game already has a photorealistic art style, plus motion capture. What exactly could this add to or improve on the overall experience?
79
u/Formal_Profession_26 11h ago
True. Id argue that the realistic approach in the game looks better than real life. So if anything its a downgrade.
→ More replies (1)62
u/IvanMcbomb 11h ago
Also, playing as Kratos in a fight will always be a more satisfying experience than watching a fight scene, no matter how well made it is
→ More replies (2)8
u/TomatoMuddler 9h ago
And watching a well made fight scene in a game hypes you up to beat the other guy’s ass when you get control back

u/Rendole66 11h ago
It adds money to someone’s pockets, that’s the only reason this is being made
54
28
u/AdaptedInfiltrator 11h ago
It never needed to be live action. The norse games already look realistic enough. Studios are becoming too delusional and greedy
12
u/Palamonk 7h ago
This is how I feel about every live action. Because who is the target audience? The people who read the books? They already don't care for a game's canon if it's contradictory. The people who play the game? They already have the story in a playable and somewhat cinematic experience.

u/desolate-edge 11h ago
Speaking of casting, I wonder why they haven't announced Freya casting yet. She seems to be the only main cast left that hasn't been revealed.
16
u/KarmicPlaneswalker 11h ago
That's the exact reason why not everything needs a live action adaptation.
Precisely this.
Some stories simply do not work in the medium of live-action because they lose their fantasy element in the transition; for one reason or another.

u/SizeCompetitive3965 11h ago
Like we literally have a live action for so many things because Disney does it with everything now everyone is doing it. And why would you do it with GOW it’s so fantasy heavy with the set pieces and effects it’s gonna be very difficult to pull off
25
u/Haxorz7125 11h ago
Reminds me of the shots of the new dumbledore. It just looks like cosplay. Cosplay I’ve seen better attempts at.

I think it’s the colour palette of the surrounding nature. It’s too vibrant. 2018 was a lot colder and washed out

This looks AI at first glance

u/bio-digital-flynn Mimir 11h ago
I’m still on the fence to be honest, the more I look at it the more I think it’s AI.

It’s definitely AI, look at the hand that’s drawing the arrow lol

u/Rashimotosan 11h ago
Not seeing it personally but Santa Monica retweeted it so if it's AI, it's official sanctioned use of it sadly.

I think Photoshop of a screen test. The slightly off details seem like trying to fit stuff together that didn't exist at the same time rather than details trying to meet each other.
Didn't they only just announce the casting?
→ More replies (2)28
u/_Peener_ 8h ago
That’s what I was thinking too. I mean they just announced new cast members like a week or 2 ago but now they’re filming in costume and everything?
4
u/BetterVantage 7h ago
I don’t know what the case is here specifically, but it’s actually very common for actors to be announced after filming has already started.
70
u/Alarmed-Ask-2387 11h ago
It actually looks normal. Just weirdly holding and pulling on the arrow imo.
→ More replies (14)9
u/Massive_Fly_1709 10h ago
What's wrong with that hand? He has the arrow in between his index and middle finger.🤷 man, everything is AI for you guys.😅
44
u/Greatsnes 11h ago
That’s…. how you draw it back? Well, one of the ways. Lmao just because you don’t understand something doesn’t mean it’s AI.

I think everyone on Reddit needs to go outside. Half of these comments reflect a total lack of familiarity with the physical world. Anyway, the image could absolutely be generated or enhanced by various machine learning or neural network models, but there are no physically implausible elements in it.
13
u/CosmicMiru 7h ago
I feel like I'm going crazy, like did everyone just forget that CGI, and by extension bad CGI, exists? The infamous Ready Player One poster with the ridiculously long leg came out way before AI

What about it? Looks like he has protection on two of his fingers and the wrist guard makes the pinky look cut off a bit. Is that why you think its AI?

It looks more like a camera/costume test than anything
262
u/_Football_Cream_ 11h ago
That was my thought as well. They just recently announced these casting so I feel like this image can’t be from actually shooting just yet.
Either way I’ll reserve final judgement until I see how they look actually on screen in a trailer.

Can I say? Even the first photos of Henry Cavill from The Witcher were awful. I hope they still have the final touches to do..

u/Val_Killsmore 9h ago
It's pretty common for first images of shows/movies to look uncanny for some reason. Part of the reason is they aren't actually from the show/movie, just test images. Another part is there's no post production editing. The show will most likely look better after the finished product. This image is just to show who Kratos and Boy will look like.

Yeah I saw someone say that it looked like a bald cap and fake beard which kinda confuses me. At least from the beard standpoint, can’t Ryan hurst grow like a massive beard?
11
u/JudgeShronks 11h ago
Yeah this has been stuck in my chest so I’ll go out and say it but these costumes don’t look good at all for a live action series. Like, at the start of GOW 2018 they are survivors, they live on animal pelts and leather. Why do the costumes look so artificial? They look made more out of polyester other than anything that hunter-gatherers would wear. Yes, in style they look the same as their in-game outfits, but the texture looks so off, like they didn’t bother trying to translate those garments into reality. By the looks of it they didn’t even make Ryan Hurst actually bald.

u/NickFriskey 11h ago
Thank you for this, this has been bugging me staring at this pic I've not been able to put my finger on exactly what's bugging me about it. Its the all of the above you've pointed out everything looks so new and shiny costume wise. I thought it'd look much more rugged costume wise and a little darker lighting wise. I'm not one of these guys who like washed out game of thrones lighting and colour gradients but this just looks way too saturated its like a channel 5/ sci fi early 2000s saturday morning kids fantasy show. From what I can see of the axe it looks like rubber. Everything just looks too fake and deliberate

This is the one sensible comment I’ve seen so far. They announced the Atreus casting less than a month ago. Pretty dumb of Amazon to drop this but people need to calm the hell down - this will be nothing close to the final product.

Nah it's just the lighting and pose for Kratos. Im worried the actor has no idea how Kratos is supposed to look bc nothing about his stance projects the same energy. Just a terrible shot altogether

Not the case at all, GOW is already a realistic looking game. The problem is that Kratos looks like a cosplayer.

The actor for Atreus looks a bit too young
31
u/Talk-O-Boy 10h ago
I was thinking the same thing.
Maybe they tried to go younger than his in-game counterpart, because they don’t want him to age out of the role before Ragnarok?
3
u/strawbrryfields4evr_ 8h ago
I read he’s 11-12 though.
4
u/No_Thanks2844 2h ago
His age is irrelevant, we are talking about what he looks like. Even if he is 18 he looks too young and small compared to his video game counterpart.

He’ll grow into it. Assuming there’s a season 2 and given how fricking long shows take he will be old enough by S2 I’m sure
6
u/HearTheEkko 4h ago
He does but he's apparently 12, which is just a tad older than Atreus in the first game. He'll look the right age in Season 2 tho.

u/ibse 11h ago
The costumes are on point. I don't mind the Atreus actor since he's a little kid. But there's definitely something off with Kratos. They need to give him a thicker and pricklier beard, that's the first thing that looks really bad at first glance. Also his expression isn't that Kratos-like in this photo.
11
u/wnaleatoreo 11h ago
I sincerely believe that all the problems can be fixed with a few changes.
Kratos' beard should be darker/longer, his skin should be more ash-white, he should be positioned so that he doesn't look like he has a belly, and Atreus' clothes should be tighter so that he looks slimmer/taller like in the game

The costumes look like costumes. Brand new. Never worn in a literal forest life.

u/ICumCoffee 12h ago
There’s something off but i can’t tell what. I know there’s gonna be some trade offs while adapting to live action, but this look a but off. Still excited for the series.

Someone else said there’s both a bald cap and fake beard being used above: could that be it?

Hurst isn’t really giving Kratos here. It’s just a picture so I remain optimistic but there’s something about his stance and facial expression that just are not cutting it lol.

u/GerrardGabrielGeralt 11h ago
The biggest negative thing I'd say about this is that Atreus's face looks too pretty, like he's just too young here
12
u/victorespinola 11h ago
This is AI, right?
I was hyped, but honestly, if this is real, it’s horrible.
Nothing feels real and the actors’s characterization is just off. Really hope they adjust a lot of things.
26
u/Joel_Vanquist 11h ago
Regardless if it's AI or not, starting with the Norse Saga simply doesn't work as you won't be able to truly understand Kratos' change and growth from the Greek days.
I cant imagine playing GOW 2018 without the Greek games first. The Athena + blades of chaos scene wouldn't have the same immense weight.

The bald cap and fake beard look awful. But I’d guess this is a promo shot and not a finalized still from the series, so there’s still of ways in which this could improve. The art direction seems on point though.

u/VanillaBraun 11h ago
Is it confirmed Hurst is using a bald cap for this? You’d think for a role like this you’d just shave. I know he can grow a pretty epic beard so I really don’t think that part is fake.
→ More replies (3)6
u/KarmaViking 11h ago
I don’t think it’s confirmed but it’s certainly what it seems like to me. My way of thinking is that they haphazardly put together a costume/set test before the actors were able to fully commit their bodies to the role.
3
u/VanillaBraun 11h ago
You’re probably right. I figured they were months away from shooting still so was pretty surprised to see images already

6
u/therejectethan 11h ago
No seriously is this real? This looks AI, but I’m hesitant. Also didn’t they JUST start announcing the cast a month or so ago? Would shooting start this soon? Did I miss them announcing who they cast as Atreus? Also look at how he is holding the arrow. Don’t most people have their index finger pointed when aiming?

3
u/EnclaveOverlord 11h ago
I'm sure it'll look better when it actually comes out, this looks more like a photoshoot than an actual shot from that show. But I do wonder why studios do this sometimes and show stuff in such an undercooked state. I get Henry Cavill Geralt reveal flash backs.

I know it’s too soon to comment, but this version of Kratos look weird ..
3
u/Fares26597 11h ago
I guess.
I'm sure a lot of people are gonna be happy with it being so accurate to the game, but I say when you have a video game that is already so cinematic, what's the point of doing it again the same way on film? I mean it's not like it looks any better, to put it nicely.
I would've been more interested if they changed up things here and there. They might do that story-wise, but the visuals don't have to be exempt from that
